There has often been a lack of respect for these often brutally attacked of British mammals. It was often a misunderstanding to the life of these tiny animals that for so many years both amateurs and professionals alike sought any method for their removal from their chosen haunts. Still today many bad practices are employed that inflict cruelty and possible suffering which needs to be addressed and prohibited. It must be accepted that with any form of animal management there is a possibility for some suffering to occur, that has now been addressed by new legislation under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and hopefully will be extended to ensure that further guidance to the control of these animals will see this traditional method for mole control continue in this modern world.

The use of traps for mole control has been undertaken for centuries and it must be accepted that it is an effective and efficient method when carried out correctly. It is impossible to say that it is without some level of suffering by the very nature that the implements capture, but new changes to some trap designs now operate to humanely despatch any captured mole over 90% of the time when used correctly. However  there are occurrences often out of the direct control of the operator that can influence this, and it is for these reasons that Professional molecatchers continue to display their passion and respect by daily trap inspections. It is these people that are the future of this traditional craft and supported by those people who employ them to carryout mole control will ensure a new level of welfare for moles and a standard of service acceptable to all.
